Post polio syndrome

Introduction

POST-POLIO SYNDROME (PPS) refers to new or progressive muscle weakness and disability in survivors of poliomyelitis, usually occurring decades after the initial infection.[1]

 Epidemiology

  • Estimates of the incidence and prevalence of PPS vary with criteria used
  • New symptoms related to prior polio, approximately one-half
  • Symptoms include weakness, pain, fatigability, and concentration difficulty.
  • New, progressive weakness frequency drops to approximately 20 to 30 percent of polio survivors
  • Average onset of new symptoms occurs approximately 35 years after the initial polio episode,
  • Range is between 8 and 71 years.
  • PPS occurs sooner in patients with more severe original disease [1]
