Peripheral vascular disease

Reduced circulation to extremities from atherosclerotic plaque formation causes a syndrome known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD) .It is almost only seen in smokers but certainly other vascular risk factors can cause it like diabetes and hypertension.

Testing

  • Office testing is an excellent way to screen for PVD. BP is taken in an arm and leg and leg should be more than arm. So an ankle-brachial index >1 is normal.
